betty

Betty, herself
Betty is the 50’s housewife (think "Betty Crocker") reinvented for the 21st century. Instead of working in the kitchen (burning all those nasty fossil fuels with her oven and stovetop running), she is figuring out ways to "green" the American lifestyle.  She tends to the Earth, bringing a better world to the table, rather than a big roast turkey. Betty believes big changes begin with small steps and sees the potential in all of us to do better.

teri

Teri Kent, founder
This former middle-school English teacher, turned stay-home mom grew up in the West. Teri learned a love of nature while hiking the red rocks of Arches National Park and mountain-biking in Moab.  Eight years ago she and her husband relocated to Charlottesville so he could complete his PhD in Biomechanical Engineering.  And now they're here to stay. Teri taught in Cville, but left teaching to raise her two boys.  Now that they are school-age, she has the energy and determination to bring everyone in this growing green community together with an interactive, informative, and user-friendly website that will make a difference!

mom&me

Nan Strother, aka Betty Lou or Mom
My mom has been an invaluable supporter of Better World Betty from the beginning (November 25, 1970!).  I thank her for the copious amounts of long-distance listening, advising, and typing (sometimes into the wee hours --“email sent 3:40am”).  Besides inheriting her fabulous ability to flirt, I also have her stubbornness - I mean perserverance.  Thanks, Mom.  She goes green by using biodegradable golf tees, driving her electric golf cart to the gym, and lifting her reuseable Better World Betty bags.

dog

Murphy, resident dog
Murphy is our 14 year old Hungarian Viszla.  She got her name from Murphy Brown, a strong, independent woman.  Besides being the oldest girl on the block, she’s also been the most patient, growing up with two rambunctious boys and a busy Betty-obsessed mom.  She goes green by eating Iams 32lb green “active senior” dog food!

Many thanks to Lauren Moriarty and Dav Banks for their invaluable help with the site!
